Learning management

Pilot one course before you choose an LMS

A small business LMS earns its place when one real course runs end to end. This shortlist draws on official product documentation from two dedicated platforms, so you can plan a pilot rather than a rollout.

Start with your team.

Compare the same course, learner journey, status report and export in both platforms. Start with the content you already use and the evidence your training manager needs.

2 dedicated LMS platforms selected from official documentation. We have not published individual reviews or tested customer accounts for these tools. These are starting points for evaluation, not an exhaustive market list or a scored ranking. Several may suit the same need.

TalentLMS

Teams bringing existing package files alongside courses built in the platform

Vendor documentation positions TalentLMS for training employees, customers and partners, with content and tracking kept in one place. Treat that as the scope to test in a pilot.

Pricing approachA free plan covers up to 5 users and 10 courses. Paid pricing changes with user band, term, content library and the flexible option, so ask for a written quote.

Confirm in your demoUse a fictional training example to test a failed attempt, retry and reported status.

360Learning

Teams authoring natively and reporting on completion plus scores

Documentation describes core authoring, blended learning paths, groups and collaboration, and reporting on completion and scores.

Pricing approachTeam is self-serve at 8 USD per active user per month for up to 100 users.

Confirm in your demoConfirm the billing lifecycle: an account counts once created or activated, and admin accounts are billable.

Decide what the LMS owns

An LMS manages assigned learning and progress, not only stored documents. The scope here is employee training for a small team, not academic programs or institutional rankings. TalentLMS frames the same idea as centralized content and tracking.

Our SOP software guide covers Trainual and Whale for documented procedures, and those pages remain useful reference material. LMS selection simply turns on different questions: delivery formats, assessment behavior, and the evidence you can export afterwards.

  • List the courses you assign, not every document you store.
  • Name the manager who checks the work after the course, separately from the quiz.
  • Keep academic comparisons out of scope; this is workplace training.

Import a package or author natively

TalentLMS documentation covers uploading SCORM 1.2, xAPI and cmi5 packages, and states that AICC is not supported. Check the version stamped inside your own file rather than reading a general SCORM label as confirmation of SCORM 2004.

360Learning documentation explains that you can download activities rather than a whole native course, that native courses cannot be converted to SCORM, and that an uploaded SCORM file can be downloaded. Answer that portability question per platform.

  • Confirm the exact version inside your package file before importing.
  • Test resume behavior mid-module, not just the first launch.
  • Ask what leaves the platform if you change vendors in two years.

Separate completion from a pass

360Learning documentation notes that a native course can reach 100 percent completion even when the score sits below the minimum or the learner has used the maximum attempts, and that SCORM completion depends on conditions set inside the file.

TalentLMS offers an optional setting to retain a failed status upon retry, so a learner retaking a module can still show as not passed. Read the labels after the retry. Neither record proves competence at the desk, which stays a manager observation.

  • Run one failed attempt and one pass on the same pilot course.
  • Capture the report label after the retry, not only the final score.
  • Record the manager check separately from the quiz result.

Count the accounts you will be billed for

The TalentLMS free plan covering 5 users and 10 courses is sized for a pilot. Paid pricing moves with user band, term, content library and the flexible option, so ask for written confirmation of what your tier includes rather than inferring it.

360Learning bills per active user, where an account counts once created or activated during the cycle rather than only when someone logs in or attends a course. Admin accounts are billable; the minimum monthly invoice is 8 USD.

  • Get the definition of registered, active and billed users in writing.
  • Add authors, admins and seasonal staff to the headcount before comparing.
  • Price content library, authoring, hosting and support separately from the per-user line.

Run the demo as admin and as learner

Set up a team of five fictional accounts and one course called Handling a customer handoff. Ask the admin to confirm how many accounts are counted. Then take the learner seat on a real phone and open an actual file.

If you use AI to draft questions, have a person check accuracy and relevance against your process. Ask for the filename, version, owner and evidence export you would share with a training manager.

  • Create five fictional accounts and one course, then confirm the billable count.
  • Open a real file on a phone instead of assuming offline playback.
  • Request filename, version and owner on every evidence export.

Your questions, answered.

Which LMS is best for small businesses?

There is no single winner here. Both entries are documentation shortlists, not reviewed tools. Fit depends on whether you mainly import packages or author natively, so decide it with a pilot.

What is the easiest LMS to use?

We have not tested accounts, so we do not rate ease. Run the same course setup in each trial and see which one your admin and one learner finish without outside help.

Read the source
How is an LMS different from SOP software?

An LMS manages assigned learning and progress, including attempts, scores and completion records. SOP documentation stays useful as reference, and our SOP guide covers Trainual and Whale for that job.

Read the source
Can I pilot an LMS for free?

TalentLMS lists a free plan for up to 5 users and 10 courses, which matches a five-account pilot built around one course.

Read the source
Which SCORM version do I need?

Check the version inside your own package. TalentLMS documentation covers SCORM 1.2, xAPI and cmi5 uploads and states that AICC is not supported, so confirm before assuming a newer standard.

Can I take my courses with me?

360Learning documentation describes downloading activities rather than a whole native course, notes native courses cannot be converted to SCORM, and confirms an uploaded SCORM file can be downloaded. Ask each vendor directly.

Read the source
Does 100 percent completion mean the learner passed?

Not necessarily. 360Learning documentation notes a native course can reach 100 percent below the minimum score or at maximum attempts, so treat completion and score as separate columns.

Read the source
What counts as an active user?

On the 360Learning Team plan, an account counts once it is created or activated during the cycle, not only when someone logs in or attends a course.

Read the source
Do admin accounts cost money?

360Learning Team billing documentation counts admin accounts as billable and sets a minimum monthly invoice of 8 USD. Include admins and authors in your headcount.

Read the source
How do I test mobile access during a pilot?

Open an actual course file on a real phone in the demo. Mobile access is not the same as offline playback, so ask the vendor to confirm that behavior rather than assuming it.

Read the source
Should I use AI to draft course questions?

If you use AI to draft questions, have a person check accuracy and relevance against your process. A generated quiz does not establish workplace competence.

Read the source
How should I compare LMS quotes?

Ask each vendor for the same written scope: user definition, admin and author seats, content library, authoring, hosting and support. Compare those lines instead of headline list prices.

Sources and method

Sources checked September 21, 2026. This selected shortlist uses official product documentation, pricing pages and help-center guidance. Fit descriptions and demo questions are editorial judgments, not measured outcomes. We did not test customer accounts or score every product in the market. Confirm the modules, headcount basis and implementation scope in your written quote.

Two FAQ questions were observed in People also ask in our September 21 Google US desktop DataForSEO scan; ten are editorial. We selected relevant shortlist questions rather than reproducing a top-ten ranking. Search visibility and advertising CPC are not product quality scores.
