Start with your team.

Lattice publishes a per seat Engagement price alongside a stated annual minimum, so for a smaller team the written quote matters more than the seat math. Paylocity suits HR teams already on its platform who want surveys sitting next to manager hierarchy and action items. In both cases, confirm the anonymity threshold and the export behavior in your own demo.

Two selected routes: Lattice from official documentation and Paylocity with a published wider-platform review. Product capabilities are checked against official sources for both. Lattice has no individual Best HR Tools review yet. This is a starting shortlist, not an exhaustive ranking or an account-based test.

Lattice

Teams that want recurring pulses with templates, scheduling and analytics in one engagement module.

Lattice presents Pulse as targeted recurring surveys with templates, automated scheduling and analytics. Supported formats include multiple choice, Likert scales and open questions, with weekly, biweekly or monthly cadence options.

Pricing approachLattice lists Engagement at 4 USD per seat per month, bills all contracts annually in USD, and states a minimum annual agreement of 4,000 USD. A small team meets that floor first, so ask for the written quote.

Confirm in your demoAsk which anonymity threshold is configured on your account, then run a test pulse on a fictional small group before launch.

Paylocity

HR teams already on Paylocity that want surveys, manager insights and action items in the same system.

Paylocity groups this work under Employee Voice, with anonymized onboarding, engagement and exit milestone surveys, reminders and results notifications. You can start from templates, add custom questions or build from scratch, and manager insights are segmented by supervisory hierarchy. AI generated sentiment summaries sit next to action plan items that can be customized, tracked and shared with collaborators, while HR can view company progress. Our Paylocity review provides context on the wider platform.

Pricing approachPaylocity works from a tailored quote rather than a published rate. Ask in writing which plan carries Employee Voice and custom surveys, what the wider platform prerequisites are, and how implementation and support are charged.

Confirm in your demoAsk whether a custom recurring pulse is anonymized the same way as the milestone surveys, and who can see small group results.

What These Tools Cover

Lattice presents Pulse as short recurring surveys sent to a chosen group, with templates, automated scheduling and analytics. Questions can be multiple choice, Likert scale or open ended, and the cadence can be weekly, biweekly or monthly, adjustable afterwards. Paylocity covers similar ground inside Employee Voice, where templates, custom questions and from scratch builds sit alongside onboarding, engagement and exit milestone surveys.

BambooHR Employee Satisfaction offers a simpler format: a two-question eNPS survey with anonymous responses and flexible frequency. That can be a useful satisfaction check. The documented format does not establish support for a fully custom pulse program, so compare it against the questions you need to ask.

  • Lattice Pulse: templates, automated scheduling, mixed question formats.
  • Paylocity Employee Voice: milestone surveys, custom questions, manager insights.
  • BambooHR: two question eNPS, anonymous responses, flexible frequency.

Anonymity, Confidentiality and Small Groups

Confidentiality concerns restricted access to responses. Anonymity concerns whether a response can be linked to its author. Ask how those protections apply to each report, filtered view and export. Open comments may contain identifying details, so include comment handling in the demonstration.

Lattice documents that participants are distributed across the cadence rather than invited all on the first day, that participation and response rate become visible to admins once one participant completes, and that answer results appear only after the anonymity threshold is met. Paylocity describes its milestone surveys as anonymized, which does not by itself tell you how a custom survey behaves.

  • Ask for the threshold actually configured on your account, in writing.
  • Separate the participation report from the answer results during the demo.
  • Test filters, manager views and export on a fictional small group.

Writing and Changing Questions

Lattice states that default questions cannot be edited, that changes to included Pulse questions take effect at the next pulse rather than the current one, and that duplicating a question breaks the comparison between the original and the duplicate across surveys. That last detail matters if you plan to read a trend over several months.

For an editorial trend check, keep the wording, the scale and the population the same, and change one element at a time. Neutral phrasing helps. Picture a team where priorities feel unclear: a statement such as "I know which task to prioritize when requests conflict", paired with an open prompt such as "What would make priorities clearer this week?", gives you something concrete. These are illustrations we wrote, not a validated scientific scale or a copy of a published question set.

  • Freeze wording, scale and population before reading any trend.
  • For Lattice, confirm which edits take effect at the next pulse.
  • In Lattice, check the comparison impact before duplicating a question.

Closing the Loop After Each Pulse

Paylocity's explainer places pulses next to a broader engagement study run annually or twice a year, and next to lifecycle milestone surveys. It also makes the practical point that closing the feedback loop means communicating purpose, results and action, with a cadence matched to what the team can act on rather than a fixed number.

A workable pattern looks like this: publish the aggregate result with a short plain explanation, name who owns the next step, give it a due date, then say what changed at the following pulse. Paylocity action plan items can be customized, tracked and shared with collaborators, and AI generated sentiment summaries are available. Have a person read those summaries against the results you are permitted to see, and use approved data within your organization's approved tools.

  • Publish the aggregate, the owner and the due date together.
  • Review what changed at the next pulse, in the same words.
  • Have a person check any AI summary against permitted results.

Pricing and What to Put in the Quote

Lattice lists Engagement at 4 USD per seat per month and says the module includes Pulse, onboarding and exit surveys, action planning, eNPS and AI analysis. All contracts are billed annually, there is a minimum annual agreement of 4,000 USD, and billing is in USD, so a fifty seat team does not simply pay 2,400 USD a year. The floor applies first.

Paylocity offers a tailored quote. Ask for Employee Voice, the custom-survey setup, platform prerequisites, implementation and support as explicit lines. For both vendors, request the complete annual total and renewal terms in writing.

  • Ask for the annual figure, not the seat rate, in writing.
  • List implementation, support and prerequisites as separate quote lines.
  • Confirm currency and contract term before comparing two offers.

Your questions, answered.

What is an employee pulse survey?

A pulse survey is a short questionnaire sent to employees on a regular schedule. Paylocity describes pulses as short periodic surveys, separate from a broader engagement study run annually or twice a year.

Read the source
What are some good questions to ask in an employee pulse survey?

Keep them few and specific. One rating statement about a current friction, one open prompt about what would help this week, and nothing that asks people to name colleagues. Neutral wording, same scale each round.

Read the source
Is a pulse survey anonymous or confidential?

The two differ. Confidentiality means access is limited to named roles. Anonymity concerns whether a response can be traced to a person. Ask which one your configuration provides, and for which reports and exports.

What happens with a team of five people?

Lattice documents that answer results appear only once the anonymity threshold is met. Ask for the threshold configured on your account, then run a fictional small group test and check the manager view and the export.

Read the source
How often should we run a pulse?

There is no fixed optimal cadence. Lattice allows weekly, biweekly or monthly and lets you adjust it later. Choose an interval your managers can act on, then hold it steady long enough to read a trend.

Read the source
What is the difference between participation and response results?

They arrive at different moments. Lattice documents that participation and response rate become visible to admins once one participant completes, while answer results wait for the anonymity threshold. Read the participation report as progress, not content.

Read the source
How is eNPS different from a pulse survey?

eNPS asks a recommendation question. BambooHR Employee Satisfaction runs it as a two question survey with anonymous responses and a frequency you choose. A pulse can ask instead about one specific situation your team faces now.

Read the source
Can we edit the questions in a running pulse?

Lattice states that default questions cannot be edited and that changes to included Pulse questions take effect at the next pulse. Duplicating a question breaks the comparison between the original and the duplicate.

Read the source
Can we rely on the AI summary of open comments?

Paylocity offers AI-generated sentiment summaries. Treat them as a draft: have a person compare them with permitted results before sharing an interpretation or choosing an action. Use approved data and tools.

Read the source Additional source
How do we show that the survey led to action?

Publish the aggregate result, the owner and the due date, then report what changed at the next pulse. Completing an action shows follow through; it does not prove it caused a change in sentiment.

Read the source
Does the Lattice seat price apply to a small team?

Lattice lists Engagement at 4 USD per seat per month, with annual billing and a minimum annual agreement of 4,000 USD. The seat calculation alone may fall below that minimum; request the full written quote.

Read the source
What should a complete quote include?

The annual total, contract term and currency, which plan carries the survey module, platform prerequisites, implementation, support and renewal terms. Paylocity works from a tailored quote, so request each line in writing.
