Situation 01

Everyone is paid in the United States

Your next few hires live in US states. Gusto's Simple plan covers one state, Plus adds multi-state payroll and time tools, and Premium adds support with an HR advisor. Deel's Pay US route is self-service at 29 USD per employee per month and covers all fifty states, with a managed option if you want a dedicated payroll manager.

Situation 02

Your next hire is an employee abroad

You want an employee where you hold no legal entity. Gusto now refers new employer of record customers, from May 1, 2026, straight to Remote, which handles onboarding, payroll, and support. Deel sells employer of record directly for that situation. Either way, ask for a country quote that separates salary, employer charges, benefits, the service fee, and any severance accrual.

Situation 03

You already run Gusto and are adding people overseas

You run US payroll on Gusto and your first contractors are overseas. Gusto's global contractor add-on reaches 120 plus countries and charges no monthly fee per contractor. Deel's contractor product covers contracts, invoices, approvals, and payouts, a wider scope than payments alone. Decide which scope you need, then name the person who owns the records in each system.

Keep the comparison useful

Start with a US payroll budget.

Below are base-fee illustrations for the same employee counts. Gusto’s plans and Deel’s US self-service offer have different inclusions. Use the figures to start a quote discussion, then match the features and service level.

Contractors

Payment route or managed relationship?

Gusto lists global contractor payments without a monthly per-contractor fee, with exchange costs and a $5 fee for payments to US bank accounts. Deel lists Contractor Management at $49 per contractor/month and Contractor of Record at $325. Compare the responsibilities, supported locations and payment experience alongside the fees.

Deel lists an EOR service fee of $599 per employee/month. Add compensation, employer charges, benefits and any applicable deposit or payment costs to the country quote. For the Gusto referral route, ask Remote for a current proposal.

The part your HR team lives with

Map one person’s journey before moving everyone.

For a mixed setup, draw the handoffs on one page. This is an evaluation exercise, not a claim that Gusto and Deel synchronize automatically.

  1. 01RecordWhere does the worker’s information live, and who updates it?
  2. 02ApproveWho checks changes, costs and the country deadline?
  3. 03PayWhich service processes pay, and who resolves a discrepancy?
  4. 04ReconcileHow do finance and HR get a consistent report?

Take the same questions to both demos.

  1. How many US states will your payroll cover over the next twelve months?
  2. For the next international hire, do you have a legal entity in that country or not?
  3. Do you need contractor payments only, or contracts, invoices, and approvals as well?
  4. Who on your team owns the handoff if employee data sits in two systems?
  5. Which quote separates salary, employer charges, benefits, and the service fee per country, in writing?

Your HR edge

Give both AI approaches a question you can check.

Gusto documents connecting approved AI clients to payroll and people data. Deel describes an in-product assistant for people data, payroll questions and policies. Those are useful starting points for a demo, with different access and setup requirements.

Suggested comparison task

“Explain the changes in this payroll report.”

Use authorized sample data. Compare the answer with a known report, check the reporting period and worker scope, and confirm which actions need approval. Record accuracy and the work needed to verify the result. We have not run this test or measured a winner.

Gusto vs Deel: your questions, answered.

Is Gusto or Deel better for a small US business?

Start with your states, headcount and support needs. Gusto offers a clear progression from single-state payroll to broader HR support. Deel also offers US payroll, so compare its self-service or managed scope against the work your team wants to own.

Does Deel handle US payroll?

Yes. Deel's US payroll page covers all fifty states and offers two service levels: Self Serve, aimed at teams with in-house payroll expertise, and Managed, which assigns a dedicated payroll manager. Off cycle runs carry no charge per that page.

Read the source
Is Gusto cheaper than Deel?

Compare equivalent US scope, not Gusto against employer of record. Gusto publishes a base price plus a per employee monthly amount on each plan, and Deel publishes a per employee monthly price for US payroll. Run both on your headcount.

Read the source Compare the other source
Can Gusto pay international contractors?

Yes, through the global contractor add-on, which reaches more than 120 countries and does not charge a monthly fee per contractor. Exchange rates vary by currency, and a payment to a US-based bank account costs five dollars.

Read the source
Can Gusto hire employees abroad?

Employer of record customers who start on or after May 1, 2026 are referred directly to Remote, which then handles onboarding, payroll, and support. Companies already using the service before that date keep the integrated Gusto experience.

Read the source
What changed for Gusto Global in 2026?

The route for new customers changed. Remote now signs and supports them directly, so older Gusto Global pricing should not be assumed. Existing customers keep what they have. Ask for a current quote covering your countries.

Read the source
Is Deel EOR the same as payroll?

No. Employer of record is an employment service, and its cost calculator returns salary, employer charges, benefits, the Deel fee, and severance accrual as separate lines. Payroll on your own entity is a different arrangement with a different price.

Can I keep Gusto and use Deel?

One setup to evaluate is Gusto for US employees, Deel for people abroad. Treat it as your own operating choice rather than a native integration between the two. Name one owner for reconciling records and reporting across both systems.

Read the source
Which one works for multi-state payroll?

Deel's US payroll page states coverage across all fifty states. On the Gusto side, multi-state payroll sits on the Plus plan, with Premium adding advisor support. Confirm your registrations in each state where you employ people.

Read the source Compare the other source
How do contractor costs differ?

Compare what you are buying. Gusto's add-on is a payment route for contractors abroad. Deel's contractor product manages contracts, invoices, approvals, and payouts. Those are different scopes, so ask each vendor for a written quote on your contractor list.

Read the source
Can I migrate from Gusto to Deel?

Deel documents importing records from an existing HRIS, and Gusto appears in that guide. Read it as a records import rather than an automatic payroll transfer. Map fields, pay period cutoffs, and who owns each step before you switch.

Which has better AI features?

We have not benchmarked them. Deel documents an AI layer answering people, payroll, policy, and reporting questions inside included products, and Gusto supports connecting approved AI clients where actions need human confirmation. Test both on one question you already know the answer to.
